Hey Jill,
Though I'd prefer to help by holding the camera it might be more practical to remind you that mirrors work wonders if you don't use a flash. The best trick is to lean it right under a north-facing window, stand, sit, or pose far enough back to see everything you want a picture of, and then zoom till you only see what you want to photograph. If you don't have a good zoom you can always crop with even a simple photo editor.
Nice pictures, by the way. You capture the HNT spirit very nicely.
